Amazonโs 2026 US FBA fees took effect on January 15. Amazon says they rose by an average of $0.08 per unit, under 0.5% of an average itemโs price. The average hides the structure, though.

Fulfillment fees now depend on price as well as size. Every tier has three columns: under $10, $10 to $50, and over $50. A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge has applied on top since April 17. From October 15, 2026 to January 14, 2027, holiday peak rates apply too.
What a $25 product (6 oz, small standard) pays in 2026:
- Referral fee (15%): $3.75
- Fulfillment fee ($10 to $50 band, 4+ to 6 oz): $3.45
- Fuel and logistics surcharge (3.5% of fulfillment): $0.12
- Total before storage: $7.32, or 29.3% of the price
Storage depends on box size. An 8 x 6 x 2 inch box takes up 0.056 cubic feet. That costs about $0.04 a month from January to September, and about $0.13 from October to December.

Three Changes That Matter Most in 2026
1. Fuel Surcharge (Started April 17, 2026)
Amazon added a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge to FBA fulfillment fees in the US and Canada on April 17, 2026. Itโs calculated on the fulfillment fee, not the sale price.
Real impact: a product with a $5.00 fulfillment fee now costs $5.18. Thatโs $0.18 per unit, or $1,800 a month at 10,000 units.
The surcharge applies to:
- FBA fulfillment in the US and Canada (from April 17)
- Remote Fulfillment with FBA from the US to Canada, Mexico and Brazil
- Multi-Channel Fulfillment in the US (from May 2, 2026)
- Holiday peak fulfillment fees, where it stacks on top
2. Amazon Ended FBA Prep Services (January 1, 2026)
Amazon no longer preps or labels inventory at US fulfillment centers. Every unit must arrive fully prepped and compliant.
The penalty for mistakes: Amazon folded its separate inbound defect charges into one inbound defect fee, averaging $0.60 per unit. It covers problems like shipments that arrive late, at the wrong location, or not at all. Units that arrive without required prep or labels are also no longer eligible for reimbursement if theyโre damaged or lost.
You have three options:
- Handle prep yourself. Itโs time-intensive, and mistakes now cost more.
- Have your supplier do it. Quality varies, especially with overseas manufacturers.
- Use a third-party USA FBA prep services provider. It costs money upfront but includes quality checks before inbound.
Real-world impact: a 2% error rate on 10,000 units is about 200 units. At an average of $0.60 each, thatโs roughly $120 in defect fees, before any lost reimbursements.

3. Aged Inventory Adds Steeper Tiers for the Oldest Stock
The aged inventory surcharge starts at 181 days. That threshold has applied since 2024, so it isnโt new for 2026. What changed is the top of the structure.
- 181 to 365 days: a per-cubic-foot surcharge, rising from $0.50 to $5.90 per cubic foot
- 366 to 455 days: $6.90 per cubic foot or $0.30 per unit, whichever is greater (the unit minimum was $0.15)
- 456 days and over (new): $7.90 per cubic foot or $0.35 per unit, whichever is greater
Action: review any stock approaching 150 days. Promote it, liquidate it or remove it before the surcharge starts.
How Price Bands Changed 2026 FBA Fees
The $0.08 average breaks down very differently by price.
- Small standard items in the $10 to $50 band rose most. A 2 oz item went from $3.06 to $3.32.
- Items over $50 pay a higher column again: $3.58 for the same 2 oz item.
- Large standard items under $10 were unchanged.
| Size tier | Shipping weight | Under $10 | $10 to $50 | Over $50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | Up to 2 oz | $2.43 | $3.32 | $3.58 |
| Small standard | 2+ to 4 oz | $2.49 | $3.42 | $3.68 |
| Small standard | 4+ to 6 oz | $2.56 | $3.45 | $3.71 |
| Small standard | 6+ to 8 oz | $2.66 | $3.54 | $3.80 |
| Small standard | 8+ to 10 oz | $2.77 | $3.68 | $3.94 |
| Small standard | 10+ to 12 oz | $2.82 | $3.78 | $4.04 |
| Small standard | 12+ to 14 oz | $2.92 | $3.91 | $4.17 |
| Small standard | 14+ to 16 oz | $2.95 | $3.96 | $4.22 |
Watch the $50 line. A 12 oz large standard item priced at $49.99 pays $4.20 to fulfill. The same item at $50.01 pays $4.46, plus a higher referral fee in dollars.
How Amazonโs Combined Fee Changes Raise Your Total Costs
Fulfillment is only one line. In 2026, Amazon also:
- raised minimal-split placement fees for standard-size items by about $0.05 per unit
- added more placement weight bands for large standard items
- raised AWD West storage to $0.57 per cubic foot
- added the 15-month aged inventory tier

Other 2026 Fee Changes You Need to Know
Low-Price FBA Rates
Low-Price FBA is now the under-$10 column of the rate card. It averages $0.86 less per unit than the $10 to $50 band, up from $0.77 in 2025. Eligibility is automatic and based on the itemโs price.
New Overmax Handling Surcharge for Extra-Large Products
The Overmax handling fee took effect on January 15, 2026. It covers Extra-large products (up to 150 lb) that exceed 96 inches on the longest side, or 130 inches in length plus girth. Those items pay an extra $17 to $25 per unit on top of the standard fulfillment fee.
It stacks on top of the base fee rather than replacing it. A product that cost $33.55 to fulfill in 2025 costs $50.55 in 2026 once the $17 surcharge applies. If you sell large furniture, exercise equipment or long industrial items, measure your packaging against these limits.
Most other Extra-large items got cheaper in 2026, by an average of $2.08 per unit.
Peak Fulfillment Fees
Amazonโs 2026 to 2027 holiday peak fulfillment fees apply from October 15, 2026 through January 14, 2027. The increase over non-peak rates is unchanged from last year, averaging $0.32 per unit in the US. The 3.5% surcharge applies on top of peak rates.
Peak rates for every tier are on our holiday peak fulfillment fees page.
Inbound Placement Service Fee Changes
From January 15, 2026, minimal-split fees for standard-size items rose by about $0.05 per unit. Large standard 3 to 20 lb now has five weight bands, and the bulky tier split into Small Bulky and Large Bulky. Extra-large items donโt pay a placement fee.
Standard-size placement fees (per unit; ranges depend on destination region):
| Size tier | Shipping weight | Minimal split | Amazon-optimized |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | 8 oz or less | $0.14 to $0.32 | No fee |
| Small standard | 8+ to 16 oz | $0.16 to $0.32 | No fee |
| Large standard | 12 oz or less | $0.20 to $0.40 | No fee |
| Large standard | 12+ oz to 1.5 lb | $0.24 to $0.50 | No fee |

| Large standard | 10+ to 15 lb | $0.44 to $1.50 | No fee |
| Large standard | 15+ to 20 lb | $0.55 to $1.90 | No fee |
Bulky placement fees (per unit):
| Size tier | Shipping weight | Minimal split | Partial split (2 to 3 locations) | Amazon-optimized |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Small Bulky | 5+ to 12 lb | $1.75 to $2.40 | $0.65 to $1.75 | No fee |
| Small Bulky | 12+ to 28 lb | $2.74 to $3.50 | $0.81 to $2.19 | No fee |

| Small Bulky | 42+ to 50 lb | $4.80 to $5.95 | $1.23 to $3.32 | No fee |
| Large Bulky | 5 lb or less | $1.30 to $1.80 | $0.55 to $1.25 | No fee |
| Large Bulky | 5+ to 12 lb | $2.10 to $2.90 | $0.65 to $1.80 | No fee |
| Large Bulky | 12+ to 28 lb | $3.40 to $4.10 | $0.81 to $2.30 | No fee |
| Large Bulky | 28+ to 42 lb | $4.70 to $5.60 | $1.05 to $2.95 | No fee |
| Large Bulky | 42+ to 50 lb | $5.50 to $6.50 | $1.23 to $3.50 | No fee |
Amazon-optimized splits cost nothing, but each item needs at least five identical cartons or pallets. Partial splits are available for bulky products only.
For a 6 lb large standard item on a minimal split, budget $0.40 to $0.98 per unit, depending on region. See our full guide to inbound placement fees.
Multi-Channel Fulfillment Fees
MCF fees rose by about $0.30 per unit on average from January 15, 2026, mostly on 1 to 2 unit orders. Orders of 3 or more standard units were unchanged. The 3.5% surcharge has applied to US MCF since May 2, 2026.
AWD Storage and Transportation Costs
Storage in the Amazon Warehousing and Distribution West region rose about 19%, and transportation rose about 22%.
| Fee type | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage (West region) | $0.48 per cu ft | $0.57 per cu ft | +18.8% |
| Storage (other regions) | $0.48 per cu ft | $0.48 per cu ft | No change |
| Transportation (base) | $1.15 per cu ft | $1.40 per cu ft | +21.7% |
| Box processing (inbound and outbound) | +$0.05 per box | Small increase |
Amazon is making the West Coast the most expensive place to hold AWD inventory, while East and Central storage stays flat.
Action items:
- Audit inventory currently in AWD West.
- Compare a 3PL for West Coast storage.
- Move slow-moving SKUs out of AWD West first.
- Consider a hybrid: AWD East and Central, plus a 3PL in the West.
Understanding Amazon FBA Fees and Why They Change
Your FBA fees cover storage, picking, packing, shipping and customer service. In return you get Prime eligibility, Amazon-handled returns, and access to Amazonโs delivery network.
Amazon adjusts FBA fees every year to reflect:
- Operating costs, including labor, fuel and facilities
- Service changes, such as faster delivery and new tools
- Seller behavior it wants to encourage, like efficient packaging, steady stock and split shipments
Amazon compares its 2026 increase with the 3.9% to 5.9% annual cost increases from other major US carriers over the past two years.
Understanding Amazonโs Fee Structure
Amazon charges fees in three groups: per-sale fees, storage fees and conditional fees.
Per-Sale Fees (charged on every order)
- Referral fee: 8% to 45% depending on category. Most categories charge 15%.
- Fulfillment fee: set by size tier, shipping weight and price band. A 2 oz small standard item pays $2.43 under $10, $3.32 from $10 to $50, and $3.58 over $50.
- Fuel and logistics surcharge: 3.5% of the fulfillment fee, since April 17, 2026.
Storage Fees (charged monthly)
- Standard-size: $0.78 per cubic foot from January to September, $2.40 from October to December
- Oversize: $0.56 per cubic foot from January to September, $1.40 from October to December
October to December storage costs about three times the off-peak rate.
Conditional Fees (only in specific situations)
- Aged inventory surcharge: stock held 181 days or more
- Low-inventory-level fee: under 28 days of supply
- Inbound placement fee: when Amazon spreads your inventory for you
- Returns processing fee: returns above a category threshold, or every return for apparel and shoes
- Inbound defect fee: averages $0.60 per unit for problems such as late, misrouted or missing shipments
FBA Fulfillment Fees 2026
The FBA fulfillment fee, formerly the โpick and packโ fee, is what Amazon charges for each unit it ships. Itโs based on size tier, shipping weight and the itemโs price.

| Shipping weight | The weight Amazon bills on: unit weight, or the greater of unit and dimensional weight |

For example, a small, dense box weighing 10 lb is billed at 10 lb. A larger box weighing 5 lb with a dimensional weight of 8 lb is billed at 8 lb.
FBA Referral Fees 2026
Amazon kept US referral fee percentages largely unchanged for 2026. You pay a referral fee on every sale, as a percentage of the total sales price. That price includes the item, any delivery charge and gift wrap, but not taxes collected by Amazon.
Amazon charges the higher of the percentage or the minimum per item. The minimum is $0.30 in most categories.

Monthly Inventory Storage Fees 2026
Amazon charges monthly storage for the space your inventory takes up. The fee uses your daily average inventory volume in cubic feet. Itโs based on units that are packaged and ready to ship under FBA requirements.
For longer-term planning, see our guide to Amazon long-term storage fees.
Monthly storage is made up of:
- Base monthly storage fee: varies by size and season
- Storage utilization surcharge: applies only when eligibility criteria are met
- Dangerous goods rates: separate rates for hazmat inventory
| Value | What it means |
|---|---|
| Product size tier | Based on weight and dimensions; shown in the Monthly Storage Fees report |
| Current month | Rates change by season |
| Product volume | Length x width x height of the packaged product |
| Average daily units | Average units stored each day, minus units pending removal |
| Storage utilization ratio | Stored inventory compared with shipped volume over 13 weeks |
| Dangerous goods status | Check with the ASIN lookup tool |

Aged Inventory Surcharges 2026
Aged inventory surcharges start at 181 days and climb the longer stock sits. For 2026, Amazon raised the per-unit minimum for 12 to 15 month stock, and added a tier for stock over 15 months.
| Days in FBA | Per cubic foot | Per-unit minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 181 to 210 | $0.50 | None |
| 211 to 240 | $1.00 | None |
| 241 to 270 | $1.50 | None |
| 271 to 300 | $5.45 | None |
| 301 to 330 | $5.70 | None |
| 331 to 365 | $5.90 | None |
| 366 to 455 | $6.90 | $0.30, whichever is greater |
| 456 and over | $7.90 | $0.35, whichever is greater |
The 181 to 270 day tiers exclude clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry and watches.
If you have stock approaching 12 months in FBA, pull the aged inventory report in Seller Central. Liquidate or remove anything unlikely to sell in the next 90 days. The 15-month tier makes holding dead stock more expensive than ever.
Low-Inventory-Level Fee 2026
The low-inventory-level fee applies when an FNSKU has under 28 days of supply on both its 90-day and 30-day history. Since January 15, 2026, Amazon measures it per seller-FNSKU, and it now covers Small and Large Bulky items. Grocery is exempt.
| Size tier | Shipping weight | Under 14 days | 14 to 20 days | 21 to 27 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | Up to 16 oz | $0.89 | $0.63 | $0.32 |
| Large standard | Up to 3 lb | $0.97 | $0.70 | $0.36 |
| Large standard | 3+ to 20 lb | $1.11 | $0.87 | $0.47 |
| Small Bulky | Up to 50 lb | $1.85 | $1.02 | $0.51 |
| Large Bulky | Up to 50 lb | $2.09 | $1.15 | $0.57 |
New Professional sellers are exempt for their first 365 days. New-to-FBA parent ASINs enrolled in FBA New Selection are exempt for 180 days.
Inbound Placement Service Fees
You pay this fee when you choose minimal splits and let Amazon distribute your inventory to fulfillment centers near customers. Full rates are in the placement tables above.
These fees make middle mile logistics for Amazon sellers more important. Shipping to a prep center that splits freight across Amazonโs assigned destinations lets you qualify for Amazon-optimized splits without building every shipment yourself.
Removal and Disposal Fees 2026
From March 1, 2026, removal and disposal fees are charged when each unit is actually removed or disposed, not when you create the order. The smallest standard-size band also dropped from $1.04 to $0.84 per unit.
| Size tier | Shipping weight | Fee per unit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-size | 0 to 0.5 lb | $0.84 |
| Standard-size | 0.5+ to 1 lb | $1.53 |
| Standard-size | 1+ to 2 lb | $2.27 |
| Standard-size | Over 2 lb | $2.89 + $1.06/lb above 2 lb |
| Bulky, Extra-large, special handling | 0 to 1 lb | $3.12 |

| Bulky, Extra-large, special handling | Over 10 lb | $14.32 + $1.06/lb above 10 lb |
Special handling covers apparel, shoes, watches, jewelry and dangerous goods.
Returns Processing Fee Policy
Amazon charges a returns processing fee on products with high return rates for their category. Apparel and shoes are the exception and pay on every return.
When the fee applies:
- For most products, only when the return rate goes above the category threshold.
- The amount depends on size tier and shipping weight.
How the return rate is calculated:
- Itโs the share of units shipped in a month that are returned that month or in the next two.
- You pay on all returns above your categoryโs threshold.
- Charges appear between the 7th and 15th of the third month after shipment.
When youโre exempt:
- You ship fewer than 25 units of the product in a month.
- The ASIN is enrolled in FBA New Selection, which waives up to 20 units per eligible parent ASIN.
- Returns count only if they reach a fulfillment center within 180 days of the unitโs first arrival.
Apparel and shoes: the fee applies to every returned unit, with no threshold.

SIPP Packaging Fee for Bulky Products
Since January 15, 2026, Small Bulky and Large Bulky products that arenโt enrolled in Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) pay a packaging fee. It averages $2.07 per unit shipped, and covers the cost of Amazon packing these items.
SIPP-certified items ship in their own packaging with no extra Amazon box, which cuts material and handling costs. Certified standard-size units get lower fulfillment fees. Bulky items already in SIPP mostly saw lower fulfillment fees in 2026.
If you sell bulky items that arenโt enrolled, run the numbers in our FBA calculator to see the margin impact.
FBA New Selection Program
FBA New Selection gives new-to-FBA parent ASINs fee benefits for a limited time after they first arrive. In 2026, enrolled ASINs are exempt from the low-inventory-level fee for 180 days. They also get the returns processing fee waived on their first 20 units.
Professional sellers can enroll in Seller Central, which shows the current benefit list and eligibility rules.

Each example uses the $10 to $50 band, non-peak rates and the 3.5% surcharge. Storage is left out because it depends on box size.
Example 1: Beauty Product, $19.99, 4 oz, Small Standard

Priced at 50.01,thesamebottlemovesintotheover-50 column. Fulfillment rises to $4.46, and the surcharge to $0.16.
On most items, the April surcharge cost more than the January increase. Products sitting just above a price line or weight line are where repricing or repackaging pays off fastest.
Common Seller Questions About FBA Fees
Managing FBA fees is about more than knowing the rates. Misclassified products raise fulfillment charges, storage costs jump in Q4, and returns add hidden costs. Reimbursements can be late or incomplete, and over time these gaps eat into margin.
Here are the questions sellers ask most about each fee type.
Fulfillment Fees
| Question | Fee involved | Whatโs usually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Why are my fees higher than the FBA calculator estimate? | Per-unit fulfillment fee | The calculator may not reflect a misclassified size tier |
| Why do my fulfillment fees change for the same SKU? | Fulfillment fee (reclassification) | Amazon re-measured the product and moved its tier |
| Why are lightweight products billed at heavy tiers? | Bulky fulfillment fee | Dimensions pushed the product into a higher tier |
| Why is my product classified as bulky? | Bulky fulfillment fee | One dimension exceeds standard-size limits |
| Why do measurements keep changing? | Fulfillment fee (tier recalculation) | Periodic re-measurement updates the tier |
| Amazon confirmed my measurements, so why are fees still wrong? | Tier assignment error | Systems not yet synced after re-measurement |
| Why does my fee change with price? | Fulfillment fee (price band) | Since 2026, fees differ under $10, $10 to $50, and over $50 |
| Why are fee previews different from my transaction report? | Fulfillment fee timing | The preview and live order charges are calculated at different times |
Storage Fees
| Question | Fee involved | Whatโs usually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Why are my monthly storage fees higher than expected? | Monthly storage fee | Charged per cubic foot of daily average volume |
| Why did my Q4 storage fee triple with the same inventory? | Peak storage rate | Base rate rises from $0.78 to $2.40 per cu ft from October to December |
| Why am I paying for aged stock? | Aged inventory surcharge | Starts at 181 days; steepest tiers after 365 and 455 days |
| Why is stranded inventory still being charged? | Monthly storage fee | Charges apply until inventory is fixed or removed |
Returns and Hidden Costs
| Question | Fee involved | Whatโs usually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Why am I charged for customer returns? | Returns processing fee | Every return for apparel and shoes; above-threshold returns for everything else |
| Are fulfillment fees refunded on unsellable returns? | Fulfillment fee | Once the service is provided, the fee isnโt refunded |
Reimbursements and Adjustments
| Question | Fee involved | Whatโs usually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Why wonโt Amazon reimburse me after correcting a fee? | Historical overcharges | Past orders often arenโt reimbursed automatically |
| Why are approved reimbursements reversed later? | Reimbursement adjustments | Amazon offsets credits in later settlements |
How Each Fee Affects Profitability
| Fee type | Impact | Common issue |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-size fulfillment fee | Medium to high | Tier or price-band changes raise cost per unit |
| Bulky fulfillment fee | High | Wrong classification sharply increases fees |
| Fuel and logistics surcharge | Medium | Adds 3.5% to every fulfillment fee |
| Tier assignment errors | High | Past overcharges are often not reimbursed |
| Monthly storage fee | Medium | Predictable but grows with inventory |
| Q4 peak storage | High | October to December rates hit margins hard |
| Aged inventory surcharge | High | Grows quickly for slow sellers |
| Returns processing fee | Medium | Significant in high-return categories |
| Non-refundable fulfillment on returns | Medium | Charged even when the return is unsellable |
| Reimbursement clawbacks | Medium to high | Reversed credits affect cash flow |
How to Reduce Your Amazon FBA Fees in 2026
- Right-size your packaging. Trimming a box to drop a weight or size tier saves on every unit.
- Price with the bands in mind. A product just over $10 or $50 may cost less overall a few cents lower.
- Use Amazon-optimized splits. Send five identical cartons per item to avoid placement fees.
- Keep 28+ days of supply. That avoids the low-inventory-level fee.
- Clear stock before 181 days. Promote, liquidate or remove slow movers early.
- Enroll bulky items in SIPP. It avoids the $2.07 average packaging fee.
- Prep before inbound. Clean prep and labeling avoids defect fees and lost reimbursements.

Final Thoughts
Managing Amazon FBA fees can make the difference between a thriving business and one that just gets by. Fulfillment charges, storage surcharges and hidden costs add up fast, especially with 2026โs structural changes.
The 2026 changes are about more than $0.08 per unit:
- Prep accuracy matters more. Amazon stopped prepping units on January 1, and charges an inbound defect fee averaging $0.60 per unit.
- Price matters more. The same item pays different fulfillment fees under $10, from $10 to $50, and over $50.
- Storage timing matters more. Q4 rates are about three times the off-peak rate, and thereโs a new tier for stock over 15 months.
- MCF costs more. Orders of 1 to 2 units cost about $0.30 more per unit, plus the surcharge.
Peak rates are live now, and Amazon typically announces next yearโs fees in the fall. Re-run your Fee Preview report this month, and again when the 2027 rates are published.
Proven inventory management techniques and a clear plan to increase your Amazon profit margin will help you stay profitable through fee changes.
Treat fee optimization as an ongoing habit, not a one-time task. Know every charge, use the programs Amazon offers, and keep your inventory disciplined. Do that, and FBA fees become a predictable part of your business rather than a surprise.
